There are many reasons why people develop kidney stones; a few are genetic, metabolic, thyroid, intestinal absorption, lack of water in the diet etc... The majority of kidney stones are formed from calcium oxalate or uric acid (also causes gout). It is important to know which one of these your kidney stones are formed from. Most people in the US do not get enough dietary magnesium to move calcium into bone metabolism or for other cellular activities. Without the magnesium, the calcium can deposit into soft tissues and can form stones or calcium deposits. Make sure you are getting at least 500mg’s of magnesium per day from your diet. A lack of water in the diet can allow crystals from calcium, oxalic acid and uric acid to build up in the kidneys. Make sure you drink at least ½ your body weight in ounces of pure water per day. This helps flush the build up of calcium, oxalic acid and uric acid from the kidneys.
Oxalic acid is made by the body and is also obtained through our diet. Oxalic acid can bind with the calcium to form stones. Research is unclear if dietary oxalic acid has a role in calcium/oxalic acid kidney stones. Because of this potential relationship, it may also help to limit your intake of foods high in oxalic acid. Uric acid formed stones may be influenced from a diet rich in purines. Most animal foods are high in purines. See the list for both oxalic acid and purine foods below. Try to focus on eating a diet of variety from the bounty of foods in the vegetative world. If a person is eating high quality nutritious foods with a good balance of nutrients, they may be able avoid stones from either source.
