Joint and muscle discomfort can be caused by many different issues and effects tens of millions of Americans. Most of the time, it is cause by an inflammatory response from injury, over use by the joint and muscle, or by an immune response to an illness. In some cases, however, such as fibromyalgia, inflammation is not the cause but rather it is believed that gut toxicity that plays a roll in causing nerve sensitivities creating the discomfort in certain muscle tissues that surround particular joints in the body. Even viruses can attack joint and muscle tissues causing discomfort. There are instances when a major illness or injury may be a cause, so if you think it is an injury or serious issue, you should always see your doctor for evaluation.

There are many foods that can help reduce inflammation. Please check our list of anti-inflammatory foods to see if they can help with your discomfort. The American diet provides too much Omega 6 and not enough Omega 3 fatty acids. When the Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio gets great than 3 to 1, it can start to cause an over active immune response that will cause excessive inflammation. The typical American can have an Omega 6 to Omega 3 ration of 20 to 1 or even higher. This inflammation is not limited to our muscles or joint. It can also effect our vascular system and can increase the risk of heart and cardiovascular diseases. Foods that are excellent providers of  Omega 3's are flax seed (must be ground) walnuts, chia seeds, salmon, trout and sardines.

A diet that contains a lot of refined sugars and refined flours can cause inflammation in our bodies.  It is best to get sugars from whole foods instead of processed foods. The sugars in whole grains, bean, fruits and vegetables are absorbed much slower than those from refined foods.
